Hobbs, Upchurch
& Associates, P.A. has provided site development, surveying, and GIS
services for some of the most famous and largest golf course developments
in the Southeast. Following are descriptions of some of our larger projects
and the specific services provided for each project:Pinehurst No. 2, Pinehurst, North CarolinaThis famous course designed by Donald Ross in the early part of the nineteenth century was the location of the 1999 US Open Golf Tournament. Hobbs, Upchurch & Associates began work with the 1999 US Open Championship Committee in the fall of 1996. What began as a simple layout and mapping project became an extensive relationship with the committee. HUA worked directly with the committee on a day-to-day basis providing in-house computer support, data creation and manipulation, analysis and decision-making for the restoration of the greens to their original contours and GIS mapping of the entire facility. HUA surveyed all 18 greens to be replaced to the exact centimeter, using both conventional and GPS surveying methods. There were over 1,200 surveying shots taken per green, to ensure exactness of replacement. Several of these greens were used on NBC Television as 3 dimensional renderings. HUA researched existing available data and produced site layout, transportation and parking facilities maps, marketing displays and training of personnel. USGA and the PGA have begun to closely evaluate GIS as a viable tool in the planning of major tournaments due to this consulting partnership between HUA and the tournament committee. Little River Golf Club, Carthage, North CarolinaA 700-acre horse farm has graced the center of Moore County for decades, located between the Towns of Carthage and Southern Pines. The land features rolling pastures with some steep grades, accompanied by several flat, low-lying areas in the flood plain. Planning duties included close coordination with the Town of Carthage to incorporate Little River's water and sewer infrastructure into the municipality's proposed utility system. Negotiations with the Town resulted in Little River's connection to the wastewater collection system, using a temporary pump station and existing force main. Carthage officials are currently planning an ambitious connection to the Town of Southern Pines' wastewater system, and Little River will be an integral part of the future improvements. Our designers have expanded the original plans to include approximately 1,000 single-family homes and 1,200 townhomes, without sacrificing the characteristics of the horse farm. Hobbs, Upchurch & Associates provided all necessary boundary surveys, golf course boundary surveys, and erosion control plan preparation. We also coordinated with NC DOT to abandon and realign a state-owned road. To preserve the appearance of the horse farm, the Owner asked that disturbance of the terrain be minimized, protecting hills from being razed and the valleys from being filled. Another important consideration in the design has been the preservation of several original farm buildings. The Owner is converting the farm's main, 100-year old barn into a permanent clubhouse, and the old race track has been transformed into a driving range. Other barns and farm structures are also being retained to preserve character, and engineers have worked around these features so as not to displace them with infrastructure. Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst, Pinehurst, North CarolinaThis five-phase plan features 2,100 acres and over 1,098 homesites. The community features three championship golf courses, one nine-hole Par 3 Course, one three-hole teaching course, clubhouse, tennis courts and swimming pool. HUA was responsible for all utility and roadway site design for this premier resort located in the heart of Pinehurst. Grande Dunes Resort, Myrtle Beach, South CarolinaGrande Dunes is a multi-billion dollar, exclusive, upper-end, mixed-use master-planned beach front, resort and residential community, encompassing approximately 2,200 acres of prime coastal real estate. Stretching from almost one mile of frontage on the Atlantic Ocean to a thousand acres along the western side of the Intracoastal Waterway, Grande Dunes is one of the largest and most diverse upscale, master-planned developments in the Carolinas. A wide variety of residential choices, including charming condominium villas, spacious golf casitas, and luxurious single family homes, are offered along the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, sparkling lakes, nature preserves, and Grande Dunes Golf Course. Hobbs, Upchurch & Associates has been involved with Grande Dunes from the master planning phases. The firm provided site engineering support for the master plan which included infrastructure layout and coordination, a transportation study, coordination with all permitting agencies and a detailed storm water management plan. HUA also completed the engineering design and construction management of a bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway. The Grande Dunes Golf Course is an 18 hole facility located on the West side of the Intracoastal Waterway, across the Grande Dunes Bridge. Designed by Roger Rulewich, formerly with Robert Trent Jones, the course was selected as one of the top ten new public golf courses in 2001 by Golf Digest. HUA's involvement included planning, design, coordination and permitting through the associated regulatory agencies, bid coordination, construction administration and inspection, and closeout.
