Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority, South Carolina
HUA completed the evaluation, engineering design, and construction management
and inspection of upgrades to the Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority's
Schwartz WWTP. The upgrades enable the reuse of treated wastewater at the
Tip-Top Tree Farm. The project included the design and construction of deep bed
sand filters at the WWTP to increase the quality of the effluent. The existing
sod farm pump station was modified to allow the transfer of filtered effluent
to the newly constructed tree farm.
The modifications included the installation of a new pump as well as structural
modifications to the existing wet well pump chamber. A booster pump station was
also designed and constructed at the tree farm to distribute the effluent
throughout the drip irrigation system. The pipeline to carry the effluent from
the WWTP to the Tree Farm consisted of 27,000 LF of 30-inch force main
including a river crossing. The project included the hydraulic modeling and
design of the drip irrigation system for approximately 350 acres in the first
phase of a 1200 acre project. The overall success of this project came from
being able to eliminate a large portion of the WWTP surface water discharge.
Throughout the design process, the plans and specification were reviewed by
staff engineers with GSW & SA to ensure their design requests were met and by
the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control due to the
complexity of the reuse application.
