Anson County, North Carolina Hobbs, Upchurch & Associates designed a sludge handling facility for the 3.5 mgd Anson County Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. The County held land application permits for Class B sludge disposal. The County used existing sludge drying beds to dewater the sludge prior to land application. Because of the labor intensive effort required by the operators and the dependence on favorable weather conditions to dewater the sludge the County asked HUA to evaluate alternatives to this outdated sludge dewatering method. HUA and County staff evaluated several WWTP sites and methods such as incineration, lime stabilization, sludge drying, composting, DAF thickening, etc. The recommended alternative was to mechanically dewater the sludge and utilize the existing land application permit for Class B sludge. The dewatering facility was designed with the flexibility to allow the County to phase in a Class A sludge system at a later date.
The project was constructed and placed into operation in 1998 for a construction cost of approximately $900,000. |
